Microfinance and Development: Learning What Policies Work, What Do Not, And Why

Dean Karlan, Assistant Professor of Economics, Yale University, President, Innovations for Poverty Action and Research Associate, M.I.T. Jameel Poverty Action Lab delivered a presentation on Microfinance and Development. Karlan's talk covered the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches to microfinance, the expected impacts, and which can help best to scale-up microfinance.

By integrating principles from psychology and economics, and results from methodologically sound evaluations, Karlan aims to develop clear, concise and accurate prescriptions necessary for improving the level of service provided by microfinance institutions worldwide. David Roodman, Research Fellow, Center for Global Development, served as discussant and Nancy Birdsall, President, Center for Global Development served as moderator.
