G-20 Pledge $1 Trillion for Developing Country Crisis Response

Leaders from more than 20 major nations announced last week that they would make available an additional $1 trillion through the International Monetary Fund and other institutions to help developing countries cope with the global economic crisis. CGD president Nancy Birdsall recommended such a move in mid-February.

CGD Testimony at Congressional Hearing on USAID

CGD senior fellow Steve Radelet, Georgetown professor and CGD visiting fellow Carol Lancaster, and former USAID administrator Andrew Natsios testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on International Development last week. Their common view: the United States needs an autonomous development agency. Sarah Jane Staats, deputy director for outreach and policy, reports on the highlights of the hearing.

IMF Governance Report Leaves Much to the Imagination

A new report on reforming the governance of the IMF stops short of calling for the next head to be selected without regard to nationality. It also fails to bite the bullet on voting shares.
