AlmostThe G-20 pledged in London late last month that they would make an additional $1 trillion available through the International Monetary Fund and other institutions to help developing countries cope with the global economic crisis. If this and other commitments materialize quickly, that's good news indeed. But moving fast and sensibly won't be easy.

Civil War: A Review of Fifty Years of Research

Civil WarSince 1960, more than half of all nations have experienced internal warfare, and one out of five have suffered at least ten years of conflict. This new CGD working paper by Christopher Blattman and Edward Miguel reviews decades of scholarship on civil war and the growing body of evidence on the effects of civil war on economic growth worldwide.

China-Gates Program to Tackle TB

Drug-Resistant TBChina and the Gates Foundation have announced a new partnership to fight the country's tuberculosis epidemic. Among the innovations: drug resistance tests that identify multi-drug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) in a few hours, compared to six or more weeks for a standard test. CGD's Rachel Nugent hopes that the partnership will lessen the global threat of MDR-TB, for which no country is adequately prepared.

Nora LustigLustig is J. B. and Maurice C. Shapiro Visiting Professor of International Affairs at the Elliott School of International Affairs, George Washington University. Her previous positions include director of the Poverty Group at UNDP; president and professor of the Department of Economics of the Universidad de las Americas, Puebla, Mexico; senior advisor and chief of the Poverty and Inequality Unit at the Inter-American Development Bank; senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Studies Program of the Brookings Institution; and professor at the Center of Economic Studies of the Colegio de Mexico. Her research focuses on poverty and inequality, social policies and social protection with particular emphasis on Latin America. Lustig's activities at CGD include organizing and chairing twice-monthly international conference calls for the CGD Financial Crisis Monitor.
