CGD Hosts Secretary Clinton Address: "Development in the 21st Century"

In a major policy speech hosted by CGD, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton declared international development a central pillar of U.S. foreign policy, together with diplomacy and defense. She hailed Raj Shah, recently confirmed as administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development, and said she intends to rebuild USAID into, "the premier development agency in the world." Climate Resilience: Educate Girls

Girls' educationClinton's speech on development urged greater efforts to empower women and girls through investments in health and education. Afterwards, commenting on a question about climate, Birdsall mentioned a forthcoming paper by CGD senior fellow David Wheeler that shows female education is a key to increasing climate resilience. The paper is out and offers yet another compelling reason to do the right thing.

Nancy Birdsall

An internationally recognized expert on the impact of rich-country policies on poor people in developing countries, Birdsall is the author, co-author, or editor of more than a dozen books and over 100 articles in scholarly journals and monographs, published in English and Spanish. Shorter pieces of her writing have appeared in dozens of U.S. and Latin American newspapers and periodicals. She writes extensively on globalization and inequality and the reform of multilateral institutions, among other topics. Her most recent edited volume is The White House and the World: A Global Development Agenda for the Next U.S. President, a collection of policy essays by CGD fellows.
