2009 Commitment to Development Award Presented to Diego Hidalgo as Blizzard Begins

CGD president Nancy Birdsall and Foreign Policy editor-in-chief Moisés Naím presented the 2009 Commitment to Development "Ideas in Action" Award to Diego Hidalgo Schnur, the founder of numerous organizations that promote development and democracy in Spain, Europe, and across the globe. Given annually since 2003, the award honors an individual or organization that has made a significant contribution to changing attitudes and policies toward the developing world.

Debt Déja -Vu All Over Again?

In 2005, the G-7 led the international financial institutions to cancel 100 percent of their outstanding debt claims on heavily indebted poor countries. But high World Bank and AfDB lending to poor countries and possibly overconfident growth projections have raised concerns about a renewed debt crisis. Benjamin Leo, who was with the U.S. Treasury during the inception and implementation of past debt relief efforts, suggests steps for avoiding debt déjà-vu.

A Development Take on Obama's Budget Request

What does President Obama's first budget request mean for U.S. support to global development? CGD director of policy outreach Sarah Jane Staats puts the numbers in perspective. First, she notes, development gets a modest boost as part of freeze-exempt security spending. Second, Congress will have a tough job to maintain the request levels. And finally, though the money matters, there's more to global development policy than dollars.
