Visiting Senior Associate

Jan is a visiting senior associate at the Center for Global Development and is an independent economic consultant. He works with CGD President Nancy Birdsall and the climate change team on issues of climate change and development.
Before joining CGD, Jan worked as an assistant to the Chief Economist of the World Bank, revising lending programs and covering, among other issues, climate change. While at the World Bank, Jan also advised on the financial structure of the Pneumo AMC, CGD’s brainchild.
From 2002-2003, he worked as a Research Expert for the UN Office on Drugs and Crime in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. For UNODC, he coordinated the establishment of a Coordination and Analysis Unit for the Regional Office for Central Asia, with the mandate to build research capacity and support strategic planning of interventions. Short-term assignments have taken him to UNDP and Amnesty International.
Jan holds Master’s degrees in International Relations from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies, and in Public Administration from Columbia University, where he was a German Marshall Fund Scholar. Currently, he is pursuing a PhD at Oxford, working on environmental and development economics.
