James Habyarimana

James Habyarimana is a non-resident fellow at the Center for Global Development. He joined the center in September 2004 just after completing his doctoral studies in development economics at Harvard University. His main research in graduate school touched on the role of public finance in improving educational outcomes in Zambia, the disease environment as a constraint to productivity and the benefits of banking relationships to firms. He has also done work in trying to estimate the impact of health related shocks to teachers on learning in Zambia and characterizing absenteeism amongst public service providers in Uganda. Currently he is starting a number of research projects trying to estimate the impact of anti retro-viral treatment on a number of socio-economic outcomes in Africa. He is also working on an experimental study investigating the role of ethnicity in resolving collective action problems.
