Following SOP at CGD, I have drafted a brief to accompany my forthcoming book, which is now expected out in January. (Here's an example of a finished brief, for Mead Over's new book on AIDS.)
And following SOP on this open book blog, I'm sharing the draft with you. I'd welcome comments.
I am tempted to write, "The Open Book Is Now Closed." I don't mean that this blog is shutting down---though obviously it's been pretty quiet lately---only that the process of making the book as become less public.
With a huge sigh and no little sheepishness at the lateness, I handed off the full manuscript of Due Diligence to the editor today. I started thinking about this project nine years ago, working on it five years ago, and writing it three years ago. The beast has 33 figures and tables, 359 references, 693 footnotes, and 110,000 words. I am tired.
No chapter draft looked more archaic in my rewriting pass than that of chapter 8. When I wrote it a year ago, India was on "everyone's watch list." It's come off those lists now.
The long march is coming to an end. As you can see, I'm making a big push to get the darn book done. I just posted a re-edited chapter 5 (.docx, .pdf). I hope to have 6 and 7 ready for the editor by the end of the month.
I revised chapter 2 last fall. This time through (.docx, .pdf), I mostly worked to incorporate comments from the peer reviewers. In particular, I think I did a better job of summarizing the chapter at the start and end and linking explicitly to the book's main ideas.
