Akula v. Yunus: Commercial Microcredit = Just Profit or Unjust Profiteering?

Did you catch the microcredit debate at the Clinton Global Initiative conference last Tuesday? OK, I wasn't invited to the ex-president's annual gathering either. But, rather amazingly, I watched the debate live on my Droid while being a soccer dad. You can watch the whole thing at the bottom of this post. It was a good show. It put on one stage the two leading (disagreeing) voices in the hottest controversy in microfinance.

Death of a Microfinance Institution

Four years ago, the Dutch bank ABN AMRO commissioned a report from CGD on what makes some microfinance institutions succeed as businesses. I wrote it with Uzma Qureshi. We began the project by networking, looking for good people to talk to and good institutions to learn from. Perhaps it was Beth Rhyne who pointed us to Gabriel Solorzano, the founding head of FINDESA in Nicaragua. We called him.

To Fee or Not to Fee (II)

An early post, To Fee or Not to Fee, asked what we are supposed to make of advocates who assail "user fees" in health and education (which charge the poor for the services they receive) while celebrating microcredit, which is characterized by passing most of its costs on to borrowers.

High-tech Microfinance: The Business Case

A theme I have hardly blogged is what the business perspective teaches us about how microfinance does and can work. A few years ago ABN AMRO commissioned CGD to write a report on why some microfinance institutions (MFIs), including non-profits, manage to cover costs, attract capital, and grow to serve more people---in a phrase, to succeed as businesses. Chapter 5 of the book (draft due soon) is based on that paper. Having worked this seam already, I think about it less now.
