The Center for Global Development, an independent, non-partisan think tank in Washington, DC, seeks a creative, focused and flexible Web Technology Coordinator to lead continued rapid innovation of CGD’s online presence in support of the Center’s mission. The successful candidate will be a web generalist with a solid command of Drupal and will be responsible for increasing CGD’s reach and influence by growing our audience and deepening its engagement on our Drupal-based website and elsewhere. The Web Technology Coordinator works closely with a small team of communications professionals and interacts frequently with CGD’s senior staff to support their efforts to increase the real-world impact of their research and policy work.

CGD has recently moved its large, content-rich site to a newly designed Drupal platform. The Coordinator will be responsible for initiating continual improvements on that platform, and for training and overseeing the web work of staff with basic HTML skills who handle routine updates. The job requires fielding requests from senior staff for a wide range of interactive web-based tools, meeting these in-house when possible, deciding which to pass on to an external vendor, and then managing the delivery of these services in a cost-effective manner. The Coordinator also will be responsible for tracking and reporting on the success of these efforts and analyzing web traffic data to identify opportunities for further innovation.

Innovative individuals with a proven results-oriented track record who have the skills and desire to tap the power of new information and media technologies to reduce global poverty and inequality are encouraged to apply.

Duties include:

  • Overseeing the planning, development and continued innovation of the CGD website
  • Working with CGD senior staff to turn their work and ideas into engaging Web pages and applications, either through in house development or by finding and working with appropriate vendors
  • Driving website traffic growth and bringing CGD’s work to a global audience
  • Tracking web visitor and newsletter subscriber data, and then using that data to recommend and implement upgrades and new features
  • Coordinating site-wide web updates, blog posts and maintenance

Required Skills:

  • Experience with Drupal, including module installations and upgrades, security updates and custom enhancements
  • Experience with HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Experience deploying and integrating web services and API’s, such as Twitter, Facebook, Google Maps and Google Charts
  • Experience with Google Analytics, or other web stats tracking and reporting
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, especially the ability to communicate technology ideas to non-technical audiences
  • Ability to manage the relationship with a web development vendor, by completing website tasks in house, or assigning to the vendor as necessary
  • Proven ability to be a team player, with patience and flexibility

Desired Skills:

  • Experience developing web sites and applications with responsive themes for mobile devices
  • Experience with PHP and MySQL
  • Understanding of basic website search engine optimization
  • Experience using Facebook and Twitter to advance an organization’s goals
  • Experience with file version control systems
  • Experience with CRM and email systems, such as Salesforce and ExactTarget
  • Experience with the Solr search engine
  • Mobile application development for iPhone and Android
  • Experience with video and audio production

Minimum of two years of professional experience required.  Experience in a web-based new media organization a plus. Interest in global development policy and/or experience living or traveling in developing countries a strong plus.

CGD offers competitive compensation, excellent benefits, a lively, collegial working atmosphere, and an opportunity to make a difference by helping to deliver independent research and practical ideas to global development decision-makers.
