On February 17, 2008 the MCC signed a five-year, $698 million compact with Tanzania. The compact focuses on transportation (rehabilitation of roads and an airport), the energy sector to increase the coverage and reliability of electricity for business and domestic use, and the water sector to increase the availability and reliability of potable water. MCA StatusTanzania's compact entered-into-force on September 17, 2008. The investments in three projects will help Tanzanians address the inadequate transportation network by improving roads that will increase commerce and help connect communities with markets, schools, and health clinics; improve the reliability and quality of electric power and extend electricity service to communities not currently served; and increase the availability and reliability of potable water for domestic and commercial use which will increase health and productivity. Tanzania was deemed eligible for threshold program funding in FY2004 and FY2005. On May 3, 2006, the MCC and Tanzania signed a two-year, $11.2 million threshold program agreement which aimed to reduce corruption, strengthen good governance through rule of law initiatives, and increase oversight of public procurement.
