Mali, eligible for the MCA each year since its inception in 2004, was again selected as eligible in the 2007 and 2008 selection rounds. The MCC Board signed a 5-year, $460.8 million compact for Mali on November 13, 2006.

 

MCA Status

On October 26, 2006, the MCC Board approved a 5-year, $460.8 million compact for Mali. The compact contains provisions for an irrigation project, an airport improvement project, and an industrial park project.

Mali's Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP) outlines three priorities: enhancing institutions, governance, and political participation; improving access to and quality of social services; and developing infrastructure and support to encourage growth in productive sectors and raise formal employment.

In the FY 2008 selection process, Mali scored above the median on all six "ruling justly" indicators, two of five "investing in people" indicators, and four of six "economic freedom" indicators.

Development Assistance: In FY 2006 USAID requested $33.4 million in funds for programs in health and education, and to promote economic growth in Mali. The funds come from the Child Survival and Health Programs and Development Assistance accounts.

Trade The U.S. imported $3.6 million in goods from Mali in 2004, most of it with no preferential access. The bulk of goods were agricultural, such as tobacco.
