Mozambique, eligible for the MCA each year since its inception in 2004, was again selected as eligible in the 2007 and 2008 selection rounds.

 

 

MCA Status

Only July 13, 2007 Mozambique signed a compact worth $507 million. 

Country Compact

Mozambique's five-year, $507 million compact will fund water and sanitation, road rehabilitation, land tenure services, and farmer income support.

Country Eligibility

In the FY 2008 selection process, Mozambique scored above the median on all six "ruling justly" indicators, two of the five "investing in people" indicators, and five of the six "economic freedom" indicators.

Other U.S. Policies

Development Assistance The FY 2006 USAID budget request for Mozambique totaled $29 million, with 64% coming from the Development Assistance Fund, and 36% coming from the the Child Survival and Health Programs Fund. These funds are intended to support projects to raise rural incomes and combat HIV/AIDS. Mozambique also participates in the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
According to its First Annual Report, PEPFAR allocated $37 million to Mozambique in 2004. This includes some USAID funds as described above.

Trade In 2004 the U.S. imported $11 million in goods, of which half was sugar, from Mozambique. Other major products include apparel, granted access under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), and agricultural goods such as tobacco and food products.
