On March 2, 2006 the MCC signed a five-year $65.69 million Compact with Vanuatu, which will focus on addressing the country’s poor infrastructure.  Vanuatu, eligible for the MCA each year since its inception in 2004, was again selected as eligible in the 2007 and 2008 selection rounds.

  

MCA Status

On January 3, 2006, the MCC approved a 5 year $65.69 million compact with Vanuatu. The Compact will focus on addressing the country's poor transportation infrastructure. Vanuatu's MCA program includes two primary components: civil works for the reconstruction of priority transport infrastructure including roads, wharfs, an airstrip and warehouses, and institutional strengthening in the public works department.

In the FY 2008 selection process, Vanuatu scored above the median on all six "ruling justly" indicators, four of fiv "investing in people" indicators, and five of six "economic freedom" indicators.

World Bank Involvement

The World Bank assists Vanuatu through its Pacific Islands projects and programs. Since joining the World Bank in 1981 Vanuatu has received five IDA credits for agriculture, transporation, education, and housing totaling $18.9 million.  Vanuatu's IDA-14 allocation over 2005-2008 will target utility and service delivery reform and promotion of the private sector.
