Through outreach from the Center for Global Development (CGD) and with the support of key actors in the US government, Haiti was added in January 2012 to the list of countries eligible for America’s largest employment-based visa program — the H-2A (agricultural) and H-2B (non-agricultural) temporary low-skill worker visa. This is a spectacular opportunity for Haitian workers and families. If just 1,000 Haitians at a time come to work in the United States on this visa over the next 10 years (just 1% of all H-2 visas), an estimated $200 million in additional income will go directly to Haitian workers and their families, with knock-on effects for the Haitian economy as a whole.
The challenge now is to work with U.S. employers and reputable recruiters in Haiti to hire Haitian workers under this new visa opportunity.
