Through a partnership with the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation called the International Trachoma Initiative, Pfizer donated their antibiotic Zithromax to the fight against trachoma in Morocco. Some 3.5 million doses were distributed in Morocco in the first quarter of 2004 alone. The widespread treatment with the donated drug - in combination with health education, surgery and environmental change - led to a 90 percent reduction in the incidence of trachoma among children aged 10 since 1997. In 2003 Pfizer committed to donating up to 135 million doses of Zithromax, over the next five years to help treat the estimated 400 million people still in need of the treatment in Asia and Africa. The contribution represents one of the largest donations of a patented drug in history. |
