2005 Commitment to Development Index Launch

The Center for Global Development and Foreign Policy present the 2005 Commitment to Development Index.

Now in its third year, the CDI annually rates 21 of the world’s richest countries on their dedication to policies that benefit the 5 billion people living in poorer nations. The provocative nature and strong research base of the Index engage the global media, donor country governments, NGOs and the research community. Moving beyond standard comparisons of foreign aid volumes, the CDI rates countries on:

· Quantity and Quality of foreign aid
· Openness to developing-country exports
· Policies that influence investment
· Migration policies
· Environmental policies
· Security policies
· Support for creation and dissemination of new technologies

CGD Research Fellow David Roodman, coordinator of the CDI, presented the key findings and explain country rankings. The Index was published in the September/October issue of Foreign Policy.

Other speakers include:
Nancy Birdsall - President, CGD
Eckhard Deutscher - Executive Director for Germany, World Bank
William Dobson - Managing Editor, Foreign Policy
J. Edward Fox - Assistant Administrator for Legislative and Public Affairs, USAID
Chander Mohan Vasudev - Executive Director for India, World Bank
