Digital Governance in India: A Perspective from the Field

FEATURING

Mitul Thapliyal, Partner, Microsave

HOST

Alan Gelb, Senior Fellow, Center for Global Development

ABOUT THE EVENT

India’s remarkable digital transformation has encompassed a wide variety of programs and services and is ushering in a new era of digital governance. Reforms include a wide range of subsidies and social benefit programs using the JAM (Aadhaar, mobiles and financial accounts), as well as structural reforms in areas such as telecom policy and banking that have made the transformation possible. With engagement in many central and state-level programs, MSC has been in a unique position to observe the implementation of this package of reforms on the ground. The presentation will provide an overview of the digital reforms, including in critical sectors such as fertilizers. This offers a good example to illustrate the power of a near real-time evidence-based approach to implement and refine policy – a rapid and iterative approach to policy making.

Mitul Thapliyal is a Partner at MicroSave Consulting (MSC) and heads the Digital Financial Services-Government Social Impact (GSI) area. Prior to joining MSC, he led the management consulting services practice at Infosys. In the course of his career he has conceptualized and managed large-scale, technology-enabled business transformation programs for the government and the private sector, including in India, the Middle East, the Philippines, the USA, Europe, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Australia.

A light lunch will be available starting at 12:00 pm.
