Please join us to celebrate the publication of CGD's major new book Why Forests? Why Now? The Science, Economics, and Politics of Tropical Forests and Climate Change, a comprehensive synthesis of the latest research showing that protecting tropical forests is critical to meeting the objectives of the Paris climate agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals. In fact, keeping forests standing is among the quickest and most affordable ways to reduce emissions while also advancing development.
In uncertain political times, the world needs solutions that enjoy broad-based support. Drawing on more than 20 research papers commissioned over two years, Why Forests? Why Now? demonstrates the disproportionately large benefit tropical forests can have on climate change, how millions of poor people around the world depend on the services they provide, and how consensus has been reached on a framework for international cooperation to conserve them.
Following the example of Brazil, which dramatically reduced deforestation in the Amazon while also increasing agricultural production, Why Forests? Why Now? argues that reducing deforestation is feasible, and that scaled-up performance-based payments are the key to leveraging a unique confluence of circumstances. The science, economics and politics are all aligned. It's time for the world's rich countries to invest much more in protecting tropical forests.
