Communications Assistant


The Center for Global Development, an independent nonpartisan research organization based in Washington DC and London, seeks a proactive and detail-oriented communications assistant to join our creative, multi-skilled communications and policy outreach team. Reporting to the digital content manager, you will play a central role in editing, publishing, and promoting CGD work across our many channels—namely the website and the weekly newsletter, our most important content vehicles. As part of the web team, you will be responsible for formatting and posting fresh CGD content in a timely fashion: this includes blog posts and all digital publications. The Communications Assistant will also be responsible for a wide range of other web-based, multimedia, writing, social media, and administrative assignments as needed.   • Post content updates and blog posts to CGD’s website daily.
  • Format, proof, and send email newsletters (HTML); propose improvements to newsletter content and delivery on the basis of performance data; systematically test new ideas.
  • Help to maintain CGD’s digital publications database (within Salesforce) and format CGD’s digital publications (working and policy papers, briefs, notes, and essays).
  • Assist and develop expertise in the maintenance and effective deployment of CGD’s contacts database (Salesforce) and related tools (Marketing Cloud and Cvent). This includes updating records, undertaking quality-control measures, and preparing campaigns. You will also have an active role in enforcing CGD’s Salesforce governance guidelines.
  • Produce reports on CGD’s performance and engagement across various digital platforms.
  • Help oversee CGD’s Student Outreach Program by scheduling and hosting undergraduate and graduate student groups throughout the year.
  • Provide general support to CGD’s communications team on publications, events, social media, and other areas as needed.

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or related field, and 1-2 years of relevant work experience
  • Demonstrated interest in communications for international development/foreign policy
  • Strong HTML/CSS skills and familiarity with web content management systems (Drupal experience a plus; knowledge of Dreamweaver or other WYSIWYG tools helpful); familiarity with contact databases and email campaigns a strong advantage
  • Experience in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign for publication layout, Photoshop for photo editing)
  • Experience using social media for organizational outreach
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Outstanding organization and time-management skills—ability to multi-task and prioritize workload, exacting attention to detail
  • Audio/video software skills a plus
