Research Assistant – Development Finance

The Center for Global Development is hiring a Research Assistant to support the work of Scott Morris, Senior Fellow and Director of the U.S. Development Policy Initiative. The successful candidate will have strong writing, analytical, quantitative, and administrative skills plus interest/research experience on policies and practices relating to development financing.  

CGD is a think-and-do tank with offices in London and Washington, DC that works to reduce poverty in developing countries by improving the policies of industrialized countries and global institutions. We undertake research and develop practical and politically viable policy ideas. This position is a chance to study and influence international development policy working alongside researchers and policy professionals.

What you’ll be working on:

The research assistant will work closely with Scott Morris to provide qualitative and quantitative research support for work streams relating to development finance, particularly on the role of the multilateral development banks as leading aid providers, development financiers, and policy actors; as well as the development finance activities of national governments. The research assistant will also provide support for work relating to U.S. policy towards these institutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Research and analysis on key actors, instruments, and policies relating to development finance
  • Contribute to working papers, blogs, policy briefs, and external correspondence
  • Review and synthesize relevant policy and academic literature
  • Conduct unsupervised research and take lead responsibility on research projects
  • Represent the organization in various policy settings and forums
  • Analyze data and create graphics
  • Liaise with external partners around the US and abroad
  • Organize and attend private and public meetings/conferences
  • Support grant proposal writing

Qualifications and skills:

  • A Master’s degree in a relevant discipline; or Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline and at least 2 years of relevant research experience.
  • Previous substantive work and relatively in-depth knowledge of research and policy relating to development finance institutions and activities.
  • Stellar writing and editing skills; must be able to communicate academic research clearly, thoughtfully, and without jargon.
  • Demonstrated quantitative experience.
  • An ability to work autonomously and take initiative on major research projects.
  • Strong organizational and communications skills.
  • Self-confidence, a can-do attitude, and willingness to pitch in.
