The COVID-19 Multi-model Comparison Collaboration Releases Its First Two Outputs

Since April 2020, a group of national governments, funders, and development partners supporting COVID-19 responses in low- and middle-income countries have been working together as the COVID-19 Multi-model Comparison Collaboration (CMCC) to support the use of epidemiological models during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, the CMCC releases its first two outputs—an important step towards enhancing the informed use of models in COVID-related policymaking.

The UK Foreign and Development Office and Global Public Goods

The UK is about to merge development and diplomacy in a single department: the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. There are plenty of reasons to be concerned about that, but CGD colleagues have pointed out some opportunities as well. One area where combining the talents of DFID and Foreign Office staff could be turned into a positive sum is in the area of global public goods.

Testing Times: The Exams “Debacle” in the UK and What COVID-19 Has Meant for High-stakes Exams Around the World

Thanks to COVID-19, national exams in England were replaced with a combination of school-allocated grades and a centralised algorithm leading to a set of results that were widely perceived as inequitable. What did other countries do, and was there any “good” option during this year of lengthy school closures? Using our COVID education tracker, we coded and mapped governments’ approaches to national exams in more than 100 countries where we could find reliable data.

1.4 Million Refugees Need Resettlement: Can Innovative Finance Help?

Today, 1.4 million refugees urgently await resettlement. Unlike the rest of the world’s 26 million refugees, they have been designated by the United Nations (UN) as having vulnerabilities that cannot be addressed in their host countries. They are therefore waiting to be moved from the country hosting them to a third country willing to grant them permanent settlement.

Malawi’s Journey Towards Identification

In 2017, Malawi was one of the only countries in the SADC and COMESA without a functioning national registry and identification system. Supported by the United Nations Development Programme together with several other donors, Malawi managed to achieve universal ID coverage in some 180 days, joining the small club of countries that have been able to effect a major leap in the registration of their peoples in a short time. Its experience offers many lessons of interest to other countries.
