COVID-19 Surfaces New Directions for Old Challenges: Three Lasting Ways to Improve Global Health Procurement

Effective and efficient procurement of health products—medicines, diagnostics, and devices—is a critical function of all strong health systems. The pandemic has exacerbated long-standing challenges—as highlighted by a recent CGD Working Group—in the purchasing of both COVID-related emergency supplies and other essential health products.

Colombia’s COVID-19 Response

Case numbers and deaths continue to rise in Colombia, and the challenges ahead are significant. In a recent note, we look behind these numbers to understand Colombia’s policy responses to the COVID-19 pandemic to date. We offer six recommendations for policymakers, aimed at supporting economic and health responses to the pandemic that work hand-in-hand moving forward.

The EU’s New Budget: Europe’s Recovery at The Expense of Its Long- Term Ambitions

After a four day marathon run of negotiations, the 27 Heads of State of the EU reached an agreement on both the Recovery Fund—a large fund to support the post-COVID recovery across the EU—and its new long-term budget and priorities, the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2021-2027. While leaders across the EU are now hailing the deal as a “win” for their own voters and priorities, inevitably the negotiations were fundamentally driven by domestic interests and priorities, and predictably, international development has suffered as a result of the cuts.
