Now Grandma Can 'Win-a-Trip' Too (New York Times)

December 13, 2010

New York Times mentioned CGD in the announcement of the 2011 “Win-a-Trip” with Nick Kristof Contest.

From Nick Kristof's Column:

Each time I announce my annual “win-a-trip contest,” to take a university student with me on a reporting trip to the developing world, I get indignant letters.

“Why put such a confining restriction as ‘university students’?” asked Laura McNamara. “How about students of life?”

Betty Michelozzi wrote that she got her first passport at age 63 to go to Guatemala on a Habitat for Humanity team and spent the next 15 years leading such groups. And Peggy from Oregon asked tartly what I was going to do for “us old folks, who aren’t dead yet?”

Point well taken. So for this fifth anniversary trip, I’m going to take not only a university student but also someone over 60. Seniors, dig out your anti-malaria mosquito netting now...

One point of these trips is that there are solutions. Helping people is hard, and plenty of interventions fail. But we’re getting smarter at figuring out what makes a difference. In Congo, we saw how deworming children once a year — for about 50 cents per child — reduces anemia and sickness, and leaves children more likely to attend school...

So, whether you’re a student or a senior, apply for my win-a-trip contest, and together we’ll try to spotlight some of the world’s neglected problems. To apply, visit my blog, nytimes.com/ontheground, and thanks in advance to the Center for Global Development for helping screen applications.

Announcing Win-a-Trip 2011 — With a Twist!

As my Sunday column notes, I’m now accepting entries for Win-a-Trip 2011 — and this time, I’ll be taking not only a student but also someone 60 or over. I’m hoping for lots of applications from both ends of the demographic spectrum.

You can apply either with an essay of up to 700 words, or a video of up to three minutes, or both. Send the essay to [email protected]. Post the video on my Youtube channel, www.youtube.com/NicholasKristof, next to my own video invitation for applications. In either case, explain why I should pick you.

So what kind of a person am I looking for? The truth is, I’m not entirely sure – except that I want someone with excellent communication skills, who can blog and vlog (video blog) in ways that will capture the interest of other readers. If you’ve done blogging, vlogging or journalism, be sure to mention that — in sparkling prose! Ditto for anything else that makes you special or will make your voice more memorable.

The Center for Global Development will sift through the applications, written and video, and help narrow them down to a group of finalists. Then I’ll work with my assistant, Hilary Howard, in picking a winner. We may want more information or references from some people (confirmation, for example, that you don’t snore).
