U.S. Woes Undermine Region's Recent Strides (Chicago Tribune)

October 14, 2008

The Chicago Tribune quotes CGD senior fellow Liliana Rojas-Suarez on the impact of the financial crisis on Latin America.

From the article:

"Although major economies have made strides in trimming foreign debt, reducing inflation and stabilizing currencies, they cannot escape the shadow that the U.S. casts.

That became clear this week with the plummeting stock exchange in Sao Paulo and a record one-week drop for the peso in Mexico, ripples from the U.S. stock free fall.

'I have always been optimistic because of the advances in this region,' said Liliana Rojas-Suarez, a senior fellow at the Center for Global Development and a former economist at Deutsche Bank. 'This is different. The shock is so large this time.'"
