While infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria attract most of the money and attention devoted to global health, chronic non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer are responsible for more than half of all deaths in low- and middle-income countries. CGD senior health program associate Rachel Nugent discusses a request for proposals issued by Ovations, a subsidiary of a U.S. managed care company, for new ideas on how to address the rise of chronic diseases in developing countries. On offer: $15 million for five new centers.
