Despite the growing strength of emerging economies, they remain vulnerable to global crises such as the Eurozone sovereign debt crisis and prolonged fiscal uncertainty in the US.
Basu argues that the crises affecting the global economy since 2007 are not independent events but reflect tectonic shifts in the global economy. Changing times demand a greater role for emerging economies in addressing the policy challenges of today's global economy, in particular the management of global liquidity, global tax coordination and even monetary policy.
