OF NOTE THIS WEEK

A new report from UNAIDS and the World Bank says the disruption of HIV prevention and treatment programs is expected over the course of this year in 22 countries as a result of the global economic crisis, AFP reports. The joint report says that in some countries, the affordability of ARV treatment is affected by falling household income and wages and the increased cost of ARVs caused by exchange rate devaluation. The paper suggests actions to address funding gaps and uncertainties, and emphasizes the imperative of investing in the prevention efforts targeted to where most new infections are occurring, and that have been proved to work.

Also, check out HIV/AIDS Monitor Director Nandini Oomman's presentation at our event last week launching our latest publication on global HIV/AIDS funding for women and girls. Following the presentation, high-level officials from the three donors, a country representative from the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development in Uganda, and senior gender experts discussed the report's main findings and recommendations. HIV/AIDS Monitor colleague David Wendt highlights the discussion that followed here.
