Dear Colleague,
In this update, we share the latest open letter to the Obama administration from CGD president Nancy Birdsall about tangible ways the United States can promote Pakistan’s “democratic machinery.” Also in this update, Danny Cutherell reports from Pakistan and U.S. civilian assistance efforts. Finally, we are pleased to announce that CGD will be releasing a new report on U.S. development efforts in Pakistan next month.
Keep an eye on these issues and other recommendations from CGD's Study Group on U.S. Development Strategy in Pakistan through our newsletter and on our website. As always, feedback and comments are welcome.
Sincerely,
Milan Vaishnav,

Three Ideas to Support Pakistan's Democracy
Given the current political instability in Pakistan and the continued downward spiral of United States-Pakistan diplomatic relations, traditional government-to-government development assistance will continue to prove difficult. However, even during these difficult times, the U.S. government should find creative ways to support the vibrant civil society groups that constitute Pakistan’s “democratic machinery.” Nancy Birdsall’s most recent open letter to U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Tom Nides suggests how, as Milan Vaishnav explains in a recent CGD blog post.

Forthcoming CGD Report on U.S. Development Effort in Pakistan
It has been one year since the release of CGD’s 2011 report “Beyond Bullets and Bombs: Fixing the US Approach to Development in Pakistan.” During that period, hardly a month has gone by without a contentious diplomatic incident in the US-Pakistan relationship. In spite of these tensions, the U.S. civilian assistance program has forged ahead, with mixed results. CGD’s forthcoming report will analyze what has (and has not) changed over the past twelve months; draw lessons from the three years of experience under the Kerry-Lugar-Berman program in Pakistan; and will offer recommendations for future U.S. engagement. Please stay tuned to the CGD website for details on the report in the coming weeks.
