Linking Major International Standardized Tests

This page presents the necessary files to replicate the field test described in Patel and Sandefur 2017. The paper attempts to link major international standardized tests together to create a more global learning metric by applying item response theory to novel data from India. Students took custom exams that pulled questions from several major assessments: Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), the Analysis Program of the CONFEMAN Education Systems (PASEC), the Bihar State-Level Assessment, and the Latin American Laboratory for Assessment of the Quality of Education (LLECE).

For each of these tests, the files below contain the item parameters for the publicly released dichotomously scored questions, PDF files of these questions, and .tex files for creating custom exams featuring these items. Additionally, we provide linking files to convert scores from one test to another given the linking strategy discussed in Patel and Sandefur  2017 as well as de-identified data from the students in Bihar and replication code for that paper. This information is provided to allow interested researchers and policymakers to convert scores from their own data, create similar field tests to link international assessments, and gather widely-used items together in one place with the hope of getting closer to a global learning metric.
