How far has the world come since Gleneagles?

Ahead of this summer’s G8 summit – and amid mounting pressure for countries to cut their overseas aid budgets – the ONE campaign has published a report that assesses progress made against the Gleneagles commitments and that offers recommendations on what future role the G8 should play. The report calls on member countries to unleash a “transparency revolution” and to invest in agriculture and nutrition.

The Open Government Partnership: challenges and opportunities

The Stanford Social Innovation Review features a special supplement on the Open Government Partnership (OGP), with articles from international experts engaged in this multilateral initiative that aims to secure concrete commitments from governments to promote transparency, empower citizens, fight corruption and harness new technologies to strengthen governance.

Enabling inclusive development through migration

Since assuming chairmanship of the Global Forum on Migration and Development  in January 2013, Sweden has set out to strengthen the Forum’s development focus and better integrate migration – an “enabler” of human development – into the broader development agenda, including the post-2015 agenda. Ambassador Eva Akerman Borje, the Forum’s new Chair, says she will work with national governments to unlock the potential of migration to promote inclusive development and she will continue to engage with civil society to ensure a dialogue on areas of common interest.

Women, a “secret weapon” in the battle for food security?

Sharing power with women at every level of society would dramatically reduce hunger and malnutrition, argues the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food in a report presented earlier this week to the UN Human Rights Council. Olivier De Schutter urges world governments to adopt transformative food security strategies that address cultural constraints and redistribute roles between women and men.
