OF NOTE THIS WEEK
Funders Concerned About AIDS (FCAA) and the European HIV/AIDS Funder Group (EFG) released a report on HIV/AIDS-related funding from US and European philanthropic donors. According to the press release, the report finds that while "total HIV/AIDS-related funding from US and European philanthropic donors decreased slightly (by 2%), most philanthropic donors increased commitments to the AIDS response in 2009." The report, which was supported by UNAIDS, praises those private donors that increased support in 2009, but expresses concern about any funding decreases. Paul De Lay, Deputy Executive Director of UNAIDS said, "As the economy rebounds we hope that philanthropies will continue to expand their investments in the AIDS response." He continued, "Investments on AIDS are starting to bear fruit as fewer people are becoming infected and with increased availability of treatment, fewer people are dying---evidence that AIDS is a smart and proven investment that will reduce costs in the long term." See the report for more key findings on philanthropic support for HIV/AIDS in 2009.
