Sustainability

Health investments and outcomes often are compromised over the long-term because of the erosion of funding and institutional capabilities. The GHPRN's work in this area looks at critical failings – at the levels of both product delivery and systems – that threaten the sustainable supply of health services. Seeking ways to increase the predictability of funding for health system over the long term is a central focus. Sample topics:

  • How can global commodity funds be structured to maintain low prices, provide sufficient incentives for suppliers and attract long-term financing from donors?
  • What are the evolving dynamics of US and European donors with respect to funding for global health, and what does that suggest about new roles for the donor community in building long-term sustainable access?
  • How do donors set priorities for investments in health?
  • What are sustainable intrinsic and extrinsic incentives for health worker recruitment, retention and productivity (linked to better health outcomes), and how can they be implemented?
