Special Assistant to the President

The Center for Global Development, an independent, non-profit policy research organization in Washington, is seeking a Special Assistant to the President to fulfill a broad array of support functions. The Special Assistant’s role is to provide timely and effective support to the President to maximize CGD impact, elevate CGD’s profile, and expand CGD’s circle of friends and supporters.

The Special Assistant’s responsibilities include:

  • Advising the President on invitations, speaking opportunities and meetings
  • Drafting talking points, letters, notes and correspondence
  • Occasionally providing research support
  • Assisting the President manage communication with Board of Directors, friends of CGD and other VIP’s
  • Liaising between the President’s Office and other CGD staff
  • Attending meetings and ensuring appropriate follow-up at the request of the President
  • Managing various in-house meeting processes and agendas
  • Other duties as required

The successful candidate must possess the following qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a development field, or equivalent experience Minimum of
  • 1 year relevant work experience
  • Strong communications and writing skills
  • Outstanding organizational skills
  • Strong internet, Word, PowerPoint and Excel skills desirable
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure
  • Flexibility and sense of humor

Salary:

30’s commensurate with experience

Online Communications Manager

The Center for Global Development seeks a creative, focused and flexible Online Communications Manager. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, updating and maintaining CGD’s suite of online communications products including: the Center’s main Web site, four policy blogs, our e-mail newsletters, Ask CGD Live Interviews online and other new media initiatives. The Online Communications Manager works with a small team of communications professionals and reports to the Director of Communications and Policy. Experience with Convio and SalesForce are highly desirable. Innovative individuals who want to tap the power of new information and media technologies to change the world are especially encouraged to apply.

Overall duties include:

  • Responsibility for the development and implementation of CGD’s online communications strategy, identifying and defining technical needs including:
    • Researching and tracking new trends in Web technology.
    • Creating organizational practices and policies for online engagement.
    • Managing the organizational Web budget against organizational needs.
  • Site-wide Web updates and maintenance.
  • Overseeing all e-mail lists and distribution of mass e-mails.
  • Overseeing the development, planning and upkeep of online presence for organizational initiatives and research --- working closely with CGD staff.
  • Serving as main point of contact for technical and creative vendor management.
  • Tracking, gathering and analyzing user data from Web/blog stats and e-mail newsletter reports.
  • Exploring new tools and technology and proposing appropriate innovations for CGD in order to cultivate and engaged online community and build our online presence.
  • Promotion of CGD’s policy blogs and online video.
  • Evaluating CGD’s Web content for search engine optimization.
  • Work with members of the communications and policy team to provide online promotion and marketing of CGD products.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of HTML and WYSYG editors.
  • Experience with e-mail newsletters and campaigns.
  • Experience and knowledge of CMS systems.
  • Experience and functionality of blog software platforms, marketing and writing.
  • Knowledge of online marketing techniques.
  • Experience working with video and audio for Web streaming and DVD distribution, preferred but not required. • Knowledge of photo editing software.
  • Experience working with Convio and SalesForce highly desirable.
  • Firm grasp of Data Management software.

3-5 years of professional experience required. Experience in a Web-based new media organization also a plus. Interest in global development policy and/or experience living or traveling in developing countries a strong plus.

Internships at CGD

The Center offers paid and unpaid internships to full-time undergraduate and graduate students.

Research assistant internships are offered to candidates with extensive training in econometrics, microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory and development economics. Interns must be familiar with issues related to development economics and policy analysis, and related topics. Prior experience with statistical packages such as STATA and Excel may be required.

Internships may also be offered to full-time undergraduate and graduate students to help facilitate the Center's communications work and program initiatives. Prior study and/or work experience in economics, public policy, international relations, national security issues, and global health may be required, along with outstanding communication and writing skills.

Intern applicants with prior relevant work experience will be given preference.
