OF NOTE THIS WEEK

Over two weeks have passed since the Global Fund's replenishment meetings, and the media focus is still on the over $1 billion dollar shortfall against the Fund's lowest resource scenario. In an effort to keep the momentum going, a recent New York Times editorial urges the Global Fund and advocacy groups to continue to press countries that have not yet pledged to do so. "This effort is essential for global health and the stability of fragile nations", the editorial said. "Millions of lives that could be saved will be lost unless additional financing can be found". While the total funding amount pledged in early October was dissatisfying, in her recent blog, Nandini Oomman wonders whether some key messages from the donors' pledges that were made have been missed in the media coverage. Tied to the United States' $4 billion pledge was a Call to Action, which lays out a comprehensive set of reforms to maximize the impact of Global Fund grants. The blog identifies key takeaways from this call to action and what they mean for the Global Fund going forward.
