OF NOTE THIS WEEK

The 63rd United Nations Department of Public Information/NGO Conference was held this week in Melbourne, Australia. The conference, which discussed the world's progress on advancing health goals, was attended by more than 300 non-government organizations from 70 countries, ABC News reports. In his opening remarks, Secretary-General Bank Ki-Moon stated that "Meeting our commitments on health is central to meeting all of the Millennium Development Goals". Delivering the keynote address at the conference, UNAIDS Executive Director, Michel Sidibé, "stressed the need for the international community to mobilize an additional $10 billion to meet country-set targets for universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support", UNAIDS reports.

While in Australia, Sidibé met with a range of regional stakeholders, including the Director-General of AusAID and the Asia Pacific Business Coalition on AIDS (APBCA). Throughout his trip, Sidibé highlighted Australia's role in the Pacific AIDS response, where in 2008, Australia provided three-quarters of HIV assistance in the region.
