A One-Stop Shop for the Best New Economic Research on Migration and Development

June 03, 2015

International migration has giant effects on global development. Social scientists are just starting to understand those effects, and the latest research is moving far beyond traditional subjects like remittances.

Economists in particular are starting to study the ways that global mobility shapes entire labor markets, human capital investment, and changes in norms and institutions. The epicenter of that movement is one five-star annual research conference, and it’s about to happen again.

The 8th International Conference on Migration and Development happens next week at the World Bank here in Washington. Beyond its role as host the World Bank is also a sponsor, along with the French Development Agency (AFD) and us here at CGD.

As I’ve said before, this conference consistently draws most of the top researchers in this area. This year’s keynotes from Dani Rodrik and Ran Abramitzky are just the beginning. I’ll again have the pleasure of again co-hosting the 8th conference with Çağlar Özden (World Bank), Cyrille Bellier (AFD), and Hillel Rapoport (Paris School of Economics). And the agenda is packed with some of the most dynamic researchers in the field, selected in a highly competitive process. This conference has the goods — the very best thinking in an exciting strand of development research.

Anyone can attend. (Just keep in mind that these are technical academic-quality presentations, not for a general audience.) For more information and to register, you can visit the event website. I hope to see you during the conference, and I’ll be posting a wrap-up blog not long after.
