CGD Climate Update

Dear Colleague,

Fans of tropical forests for climate and development received an early holiday present from Warsaw late last month at the conclusion of the 19th Convention of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 19). CGD research fellow Jonah Busch tells why—and why it matters—in Warsaw Delights on Tropical Forests.

Unfortunately, there was little good news besides that. “There was a foul mood from the start in Warsaw,” writes CGD senior fellow and director for Europe Owen Barder, who attended the talks to float a new approach based on the principle that every citizen in the world has an equal claim on the world’s environmental resources. Read his post, Nineteenth Time Lucky?, to learn more.

Jonah, an environmental economist whose research focuses on forests and climate change, joined CGD recently as part of our new Tropical Forests for Climate and Development initiative, which aims to help mobilize substantial additional finance to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation. The initiative builds on two CGD strengths: emerging lessons from Cash-on-Delivery Aid mechanisms and new high-frequency remote sensing data tools, such as Forest Monitoring for Action (FORMA).

To lead the Initiative we welcome Frances Seymour, who until recently was director general of the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), an international organization headquartered in Indonesia.  Frances shares her preliminary thoughts on the initiative in, From the Mountains to the Forests, and a Wonkcast interview with Lawrence MacDonald, Protecting Forests and Growing REDD+. Frances also outlines possible links between COD Aid and REDD+ in another post, Separated at Birth? COD Aid and REDD+.

All the best,

Michele de Nevers
