Each year, diarrheal diseases claim the lives of some 2 million people, mostly children under five. Can private sector provision of urban piped water help? This is a controversial issue, with entrenched views on both sides. This paper, “The Child Health Implications of Reorganizing the Urban Water Sector”, uses a data on sub-national regions of 25 African countries over  more than 20 years to examine this question. Result: private sector participation decreases diarrhea among under-five children by 23 percent or more. Importantly, benefits appear to be greatest among the poorest, least-educated households.
