Africa's clinical trial: Big Pharma deploys R&D in Africa (This is Africa)

July 01, 2013

CGD's research is mentioned in an article about global heath.

From the article:

Pharmaceutical companies are deploying increasing R&D resources in Africa. Their ability to conduct trials on the continent will drive product development.

Aside from the most contentious episodes, there was also a general lack of interest in product development. Companies showed little inclination to research the so-called ‘neglected’ diseases, as they could not see any way to recoup their investment. Only 13 new drugs were developed for this disease group between 1975 and 1996 out of more than 1,200 new drugs globally, and all but four were accidental by-products of other research. By 1995, the 15 biggest pharmaceutical companies had virtually closed down tropical disease research efforts.

Compare that to today – where private philanthropy, government intervention, and investment in product development partnerships have yielded a growing pipeline of health technologies to treat, prevent, or diagnose neglected diseases. Nearly 240 neglected-disease drug and vaccine candidates are now being investigated or trialled, according to the Center for Global Development, a US-based think tank.
