Solar thermal electricity from North Africa could be an important part of the answer to Europe’s long-term energy security needs in the wake of the Russian gas crisis. A recent working paper by CGD senior fellow David Wheeler uses maps of solar radiation and project finance calculations to argue that with only modest subsidies solar power generated in North Africa and the Middle East could meet the needs of 35 million Europeans by 2020.
