Job Opportunity: Web Technology Specialist

The Center for Global Development, an independent, non-partisan research organization in Washington, DC, seeks a creative, focused and flexible Web Technology Specialist to provide leadership for continued rapid innovation in CGD’s online engagement in support the Center’s mission. The Web Technology Specialist will be responsible for enhancing and developing CGD’s web presence, on our platform and elsewhere, and for tracking and increasing our influence. The Web Technology Specialist reports to the Vice President Communications and Policy Outreach, works closely with a small team of communications professionals and interacts frequently with the Center’s senior staff to support their efforts to increase the real-world impact of their research and policy work.

Overall duties include:

  • Responsibility for site themes, page design and CMS relational information architecture
  • Responsibility for Syntax open source CMS development including using web programming technologies to build, integrate and implement enhancements or redesigns to overall site functionality and pages
  • Researching, implementing and integrating API’s and web services
  • Coordinating site-wide web updates and maintenance through a distributed CMS
  • Overseeing the development, planning and upkeep of online presence for organizational initiatives and research in consultation with CGD staff.
  • Managing relationships with consultants and vendors
  • Being creative and resourceful managing and developing web technologies leveraging the open source communities technologies for cost conscious solutions
  • Tracking, gathering and analyzing user data from Web/blog stats and e-mail newsletter reports
  • Exploring new tools and technology and proposing appropriate innovations for CGD in to expand a global online community
  • Leading requirement analysis processes for site development, integration and improvements
  • Evaluating CGD’s Web content for search engine optimization
  • Working with members of the communications and policy team to provide online promotion and marketing of CGD products

Skills:

  • Experience building database-driven web sites and web based applications
  • Experience deploying and integrating web services and API’s
  • Knowledge of scripting and scraping technologies
  • Familiar with content migrations and associated strategies
  • Familiar with LAMP technology suite
  • Experience with development/stage/live development models
  • Strong web programming using PHP/MySQL technologies
  • Knowledge of open source communities, technologies and CMS platforms
  • Experience evaluating, developing and implementing open source contributed modules such as Word Press
  • Knowledge of Adobe Flash, Action Script and Adobe Flex technologies
  • Experience with HTML, CSS, XML
  • Experience with Dreamweaver, Adobe Web Premium software suite and graphic editing software
  • Experience with Constituent Relationship Management systems such as Convio or Salesforce
  • Experience working with video and audio for Web streaming and DVD distribution
  • Experience utilizing and customizing various web based data visualization engines and services
  • Proven ability to be a team player, patience, and flexibility
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills

3-5 years of professional experience required. Experience in a Web-based new media organization a plus. Interest in global development policy and/or experience living or traveling in developing countries a strong plus.
