As reported in the second-most widely read Turkish daily newspaper, Hurriyet, on November 18, 2007, CGD Visiting Fellow Marlaine Lockheed was a featured speaker at the Third National Conference on MDGs and Gender Equity, held November 15 in Istanbul, Turkey. The theme of the conference, which was attended by 300 invited representatives of the Ministry of National Education local and international NGOs and UN agencies, was "Learning from local and global efforts for increasing gender parity in education and social participation." Lockheed's speech examined education for socially excluded girls and was based on her recent CGD books, Inexcusable Absence (2006) and Exclusion, Gender and Education (2007), co-authored with Non-Resident Fellow Maureen Lewis, During the conference, Lockheed was also interviewed by a reporter from another newspaper, Milliyet. The conference was jointly sponsored by three NGOs: The Education Reform Initiative, Kader (Association for Supporting and Training women Candidates), and ACEV (the Mother Child Education Foundation).
