World Bank Re-Classifies Nation as Middle-Income (AllAfrica.com)

Senior fellow Charles Kenny and visitng fellow Andy Sumner were mentioned in a AllAfrica.com article on Zambia's reclassification as a middle-income country by the World Bank.

THE World Bank has re-classified Zambia as a middle-income country.

According to the bank's latest report, Zambia and Ghana are the 27th and 28th countries the World Bank re-classified into middle income since the year 2000.

The report states the number of children in primary school has climbed along with literacy rates and infant mortality has fallen in Zambia and Ghana.

The report was released yesterday by Charles Kenny, a research fellow at the Centre for Global Development and Andy Sumner, a fellow at the Institute of Development Studies.

The report says even if the two countries were not on track to meet the Millennium Development Goals, the quality of life was getting better.

The World Bank did its annual assessment of poor countries last week.
