Digital Content Manager

This position has been filled. Thank you for your interest.

The Center for Global Development (CGD) works to reduce global poverty and inequality through rigorous research, creative communications and active engagement with the policy community. A nimble, independent, nonpartisan, and nonprofit think tank, CGD’s raft of world-class researchers focus on a range of policy areas that affect development, including aid, trade, migration, health, agriculture, energy, environment, finance, technology, infrastructure, data, and transparency. Our aim is to turn ideas into action.

CGD is seeking a dynamic and creative Digital Content Manager to become a pivotal member of our communications and policy outreach team. CGD work is in-depth and nuanced; the team’s job, with you at the forefront, is to maintain the integrity and sophistication of the ideas, while making them accessible and engaging at the same time.

Reporting to the Vice President of Communications and Policy Outreach, the Digital Content Manager is the point person for our web content: head of a small team that is responsible for planning, chasing, gathering, preparing, packaging, presenting, delivering, distributing and updating CGD content, juggling quick turnaround jobs with medium- and long-term projects. You are often the last pair of eyes before content is published, so exacting editorial skills are a must, as well as a natural authority to go back to senior experts with salient questions. We want you to be good at grammar and graphs, skilled in both HTML and English!

A cornerstone of the role will be managing and publishing CGD’s weekly newsletter, our most important content vehicle. You will also chair the weekly editorial meeting, and deputize for the VP as needed. Your team is also responsible for website accuracy, quality control, functionality, architecture and look. You’ll need to be cool in the face of deadlines and encouragingly firm as you liaise both with CGD experts to ensure they deliver on time, and with external vendors for more complicated products (publications experience is a bonus). This can be a busy job, so the ability to prioritize for yourself and your direct reports is vital.

CGD believes in data-driven decision-making and continuous learning. As Digital Content Manager, you’ll run our analytics and web metrics, and you’ll suggest new ways to work to maximize efficiency, engagement and impact. We like to experiment: if it doesn’t work, we’ll try something else.

We are a small team, and CGD is known for its friendly atmosphere. If you are quietly confident, gregarious, diplomatic and fun to work with, this could be a great opportunity to join the CGD family.

As Digital Content Manager you will:

  • Be responsible, with web team, for updating website with great content, and maintaining functionality, speed, accuracy, consistency of voice and quality control
  • Copy-edit, proofread, design layout and oversee publication of CGD digital-first products, including blogposts, papers, reports, and other types
  • Manage all aspects of publication of weekly newsletter
  • Manage web team within larger communications team
  • Oversee SEO, content categorization, structure, development and distribution
  • Run metrics and analytics, and keep up-to-date with new, useful tools
  • Lead weekly communications team meeting
  • Deputize for VP as needed

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and skills:

  • Minimum five to seven years in content creation, with extensive digital experience
  • Firm grasp of up-to-date best practices in web design, user experience, and email engagement.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, familiarity with Chicago style preferred
  • Creative and collaborative in content display and distribution
  • Able to multitask and manage web team efficiently
  • Fast worker, flexible, cool under pressure and surefooted as a manager
  • Able to get ‘under the hood’ of the website as needed to format, design, post and publish content; to troubleshoot problems, and to create engaging content including interactive graphics and charts, as needed
  • Proficiency in web-standard HTML, JavaScript, CSS  (others welcome!); experience coding, testing, and debugging HTML emails.
  • Proficiency with Google Analytics; experience with custom metrics, events, and goals advantageous.
  • Good sense of humor, enthusiastic team player and fun to work with
  • Experience with think tanks, international development, policy and finance communities preferred
  • Publications experience a bonus (especially managing outside vendors)

CGD offers a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package. Interested applicants should send a short cover letter and resume to [email protected]. Please use the subject "Digital Content Manager” in all e-mail correspondence. No phone calls or walk-ins please.
