CGD president Nancy Birdsall writes that the likely imminent departure of Paul Wolfowitz will give the World Bank’s owners, the nations of the world, a rare chance to reshape the bank to meet their needs. There are two things that the world badly needs from the World Bank, she says: solid expertise about how governments can foster poverty-reducing growth and leadership in tackling global problems that no nation can address on its own.
