With the G8 Push for More Aid, Are Donors Spending More Selectively?

June 04, 2007
The annual Group of Eight (G8) summit in Heiligendamm, Germany this week will focus global attention on African development. While G8 members can point to increases in global aid levels, a forthcoming CGD Brief by Steve Radelet, Sami Bazzi and Sarah Rose looks at how this aid money is being spent. The authors give an advance look at their analysis in a new blog and the picture is complex: the bulk of aid increases in recent years has gone to Iraq and for debt relief; more aid is being allocated to the poorest countries of the world; and contrary to aid "selectivity" arguments, donors are increasing the share of aid to countries with weaker governance.
