OF NOTE THIS WEEK
The 2009 HIV/AIDS Implementers Meeting, which brings together program implementers to share best practices and lessons learned in the fight against global AIDS, opened yesterday in Namibia. The five-day event will focus on optimizing the impact of prevention, care and treatment programs, enhancing program quality, promoting coordination among partners, and encouraging innovative responses, New Era reports. Absent from the Implementers Meeting was Obama's nominee for the Global AIDS Coordinator, Dr. Eric Goosby, who was in Washington, DC for his confirmation hearing which took place yesterday. HIV/AIDS Monitor colleague David Wendt attended the hearing and discusses his thoughts here.
Also of interest this week, CGD senior fellow Mead Over and research assistant Owen McCarthy have released a new toolset (manual, software package and data set) that allows users to project cost implications for major AIDS policy questions. For example, what is the cost effectiveness of treatment under different assumptions about scale-up? Go here to learn more about and to access this exciting new tool. Comments and feedback welcome!
