Lagarde Seen Winning IMF Chief Spot Despite Carstens' Backing (Wall Street Journal)

French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde is expected to be named the next head of the international Monetary Fund possibly as soon as Tuesday, despite her competitor winning backing from a number of rich nations.

The inability of emerging markets to unify behind one candidate, along with Europe's early endorsement of Lagarde to replace IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn, all but sealed the decision in the eyes of many fund-watchers. Strauss-Kahn resigned in May after indictment on sexual assault charges.

"I still think that Lagarde will win," said Arvind Subramanian, an economist at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and former senior IMF official.
