Dear %%First Name%%,
How are US foreign aid folks spending their summer? They’re saying “so long” to the Global Health Initiative, “welcome back” to MCC’s Malawi compact, and “where are you” to missing MCC board members and the White House Global Development Council. Meanwhile, State and USAID are making slow but steady progress adding data to the US Foreign Assistance Dashboard.
Top officials from the White House, USAID, State, Commerce, OPIC and USTR also made their way to Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya and Nigeria. Michael Froman will tell us more about the trip and the Obama administration’s economic strategy for Africa at a CGD event next week. I’m hoping you won’t be on your summer vacation and will join us.
Best regards,
Sarah Jane Staats

Global Health Initiative Post-Mortem |
The Global Health Initiative (GHI) promised to integrate and coordinate US global health efforts. On the eve of the Fourth of July holiday, the administration quietly issued a joint message on the GHI's "next steps," effectively sounding a death knell for the initiative. CGD's Amanda Glassman breaks down what this means for the GHI experiment and the future of US global health.

Welcome Back MCC Malawi; Board Members Still Missing |
Earlier this month, the MCC board of directors lifted Malawi’s compact suspension, citing newly-elected President Joyce Banda’s quick democratic and economic reforms. The MCC is taking a calculated risk that the policy reforms--made in just three short months--will hold. Meanwhile, Sarah Jane Staats laments the still vacant MCC board seats and unfulfilled promise of a White House Global Development Council.

Foreign Assistance Dashboard: Slow but Steady Progress |
The US Foreign Assistance Dashboard is meant to be a one-stop shop for all US foreign aid spending. Last month, the State Department and USAID added FY2009 through FY2011 numbers. The dashboard and the new data are steps in the right direction. Could Congress or crowd-sourcing help get to the finish line? |
